How to Pause and Defer Updates on Windows 10

May 13, 2022 by krishrawat10 Leave a Comment

If you’re in the middle of working on something and you don’t want to be interrupted by a restart or updates downloading, there is a way to pause them. You can pause updates for up to 35 days in Windows

To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on “Advanced options.” Under “Pause Updates,” you will see an option to suspend updates for up to 35 days in the notification area. This can be helpful if you’re in the middle of a project and don’t want to be interrupted.

You can also defer updates in Windows 10

This means that they will download and install, but you can choose when. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on “Advanced options.” Under “Defer Updates,” you will see the option to defer updates. This can be helpful if you want to wait until a particular time or date to install them.

Both of these options can be helpful if you’re working on something important and don’t want to be interrupted by updates. Choose the option that works best for you and your project.

Let’s see both the process in detail below:-

Open the Settings app and choose Update & Security, where new updates can be installed as they become available. There is also an option to “Pause updates for 7 days“.

Windows lets you press this up to five times for a period of 35 days. Alternatively, if Advanced Options is clicked and updates are paused on a particular date then they will not be downloaded until that time comes around again!

Defer Updates Up To 365 Days In Windows 10

Microsoft has a deferral option that allows you to defer any updates until they are released for up to 365 days. This enables enterprises to test big upgrades and features on a few computers, make sure it works, and carry everything out until they are ready for the rest of the market.

Open the Start menu, type “group,” and click Edit Group Policy to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

Head to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business on leftside panel.

You may want to consider two of the choices here for the purposes of this guide: Select When Preview Builds and Feature Updates Are Received, and Select When Quality Updates Are Received.

Preview Builds and Feature Upgrades are the main releases improvements twice a year while consistency updates are the smaller software fixes you get more frequently – it is not necessary if anything to postpone them. However, by double-clicking on the button per community policy, setting it Activated, and adjusting the number of days in the Options window, you can defer feature changes to 365 days.
